    Let’s face it, in the last 10 years we have heard and read a lot about the famous Lasik operations, but still many people out there seem to have a lot of trouble finding the right doctor.

    Now that Lasik vision correction surgery has been accepted for a number of years, there are several popular options for the procedure.  One of these is IntraLasik, or Intralase, or bladeless Lasik.  As the name implies, there is no cutting of the eye with a blade involved, instead the flap in the eye is made using a laser.  Since bladeless Lasik is a newer procedure, there are a number of opinions around about how well this procedure works. These opinions warrant the need for a second look, so let’s check them one by one.

    First, more Lasik clients get 20/20 vision or better using IntraLasik.  Any Lasik procedure cannot guarantee perfect vision for every client, though more than 90% get results to at least 20/40 vision.  However, it is true that the new techniques of IntraLasik do get even better statistics for giving clients clear vision.

    The second common opinion about LASIK is that it can’t be customized to conform to the needs of the patient.  This is not true. The Lasik physician has control over the use of the laser for each individual in the same way that he can control the microkeratome blade.

    IntraLasik can be used for both a standard and a custom Lasik procedure.  This is true.  Custom Lasik procedures using Wavefront technology (another somewhat recent advances in Lasik vision correction) can easily be used with a laser to make the initial flap. In fact, custom LASIK is the number one choice for eye problems involving deformity. It is in this moments where you don’t really want to go cheap and you want to be sure you are investing the right amount in finding the proper doctors that you need.

    Some have heard that using the laser is less accurate than the standard Lasik procedure. This is not true since lasers can be controlled to micron level accuracy.  This gives the Lasik Eye Surgery physician extreme control to create exactly the flap needed for this particular individual eye: the precise size, shape, and depth for successful completion of the Lasik procedure.

    Another common fallacy is that IntraLase has not been around long enough for trusted Lasik physicians to have confidence in it.  On the contrary, many of the most honored Lasik physicians strongly endorse IntraLase due to the good track record from the Lasik procedures.  In addition, the quality of the machines and the precision that they give these Lasik physicians is very impressive.  So the question is: which are the best LASIK Doctors out there? The reason I had to mention this is that LASIK is not for everybody. The procedure is relatively pricey. The procedure, however, is very safe and many surgeons around the world recommend LASIK. So if you want the best, you do need to pitch in some amount.

    Similar to the contentions above, some people think that Intralase is not a sufficiently tested Lasik procedure option. On the contrary, more than one million of these procedures have been performed, and the impressive track record for this Lasik procedure has been discussed above.  More and more Lasik physicians are trained in this option, and we will see many more such Lasik procedures in the future.

But if (it seems the virus has not reached the “when” stage) the dreaded virus mutation takes place, you can expect pandemonium on a global scale.

    Like other countries, Singapore (where I live) is conscientiously preparing for the worse (more on this in a later post). At the individual level, we should start making preparations too.

    Alzheimers is one of the few diseases that is not caused by lifestyle abuses, cares nothing about race, but can cause destruction generation-wide.  It is such a debilitating disease, I hope they find a cure soon.  Alzheimers is just one disease that causes dementia, memory loss.  Alzheimers is a terrible way to end a life.  Alzheimer’s is a sad disease as it is, and is hard to watch loved ones going through it.  Alzheimers is the most common cause of dementia (artery disease, Parkinson’s and other brain disorders can also lead to dementia).  Alzheimers is a neurodegenerative disease that attacks the nerve cells in the brain.  Alzheimers is the leading cause of dementia in people over the age of 65 and affects over 300,000 people. It is a Chromosome disease, so it is one the is difficult to cure because you would have to change the persons DNA to prevent it. 

    About 47% of the elderly over age 85 suffer from Alzheimers and is the commonest reason for someone to be admitted to a nursing home. The disease does not discriminate between races. It does appears to affect more women than men simply for the reason that they tend to live longer.

    There are three stages to Alzheimer’s.

    Stage one
    This stage which last about two to four years,consist of subtle changes, such as a lack of energy and a zest for life. Also there is a lack of humor, decreased interest in family life, friends sports and other favorite pastimes. The first stage also shows the beginning of a loss of short term memory though past memories may remain unaffected. Toward the end of this stage, the person may not be able to hold a job, carry out most daily tasks or organize time and dates.

    Stage Two
    This stage may last several years and is characterized by extreme confusion and difficulty in coping with new situation since long term memory fails and is gradually erased from the mind. The patient will still recognize familiar faces and perhaps latch on to one or two in a last grasp to retain some sanity. Many functions must be given up- driving most obviously. The patients may babble since they lose track of not only other conversations, but their own. wandering and getting lost are more frequent. Some call this. Sun-downing, which is a phenomenon associated with extreme restlessness, agitation and wandering. This may become a daily occurrence usually around  four o’clock in the afternoon.

    Stage Three
    In this stage, perhaps lasting only one or two years, the deterioration is virtually complete. The victim cannot remember faces- even his/her own. The overall nervous system regulating bodily functions is damaged so greatly that incontinence, difficulty in coordinating body movements and sometimes seizures results. The patient becomes emaciated to the point of a vegetative state.

    To see a family member go thru these stages and knowing there is nothing you can do is both emotionally draining and traumatic for both sufferer and family members alike. To witness the “Death of the Mnd Before the Death of the Body” is very heart wrenching.

    Caring for a family member with this disease literally places additional stress on you as the caregiver. So the more you know and understand about Alzheimers the better is for you and your family enabling you to cope with this devastating disease.

    Free Weights vs. Machines

    A lot of people debate about which one is effective when it comes to exercise and physical fitness and gain muscle mass. These people often debate whether machines are more effective for gaining muscles or free weights. Basically, barbells and free weights are classified as free weights. On the other hand exercises that have pulleys or cables to help you lift the weight are machines.

    In order to gain muscle mass, you need to focus more on free weight exercises. So if you’re a machine enthusiast, you might rethink about which one is more effective. Free weights are indeed more effective in gaining muscle growth. Although the exercises here are much more difficult to execute because nothing is actually assisting you to employ the correct execution, this fact alone is why free weight exercise is much more effective.

    Free weight exercises are able to stimulate most of the muscle fibers as possible. This is impossible to do when you are exercising on a machine. Why?

    Basically, machines lack in promoting stabilizers and synergist muscle development. Basically, these two muscles are what support the main muscles when you are performing a complex lift. For example, if you need to do bench presses, you need to be able to make use of the stabilizers and the synergist muscles in order for you to achieve lift. And, you need lots of it. If you bench press using a machine, it will not really need any assistance from the stabilizers as the machine itself is already supporting your main muscles.

    Machines basically are not able to stimulate the muscles around the area you are working on, which are the stabilizers. You need to remember that in order for your main muscles to grow, the stabilizers should be strong. And, there’s only way to do this which is by doing as much free weight exercises as you can.

    Free weight exercises, such as squats, dumbbell presses, dumbbell fly, bench presses, bent over dumbbell row, and others put a lot of stress in the supporting muscle groups, which is why you get tired really fast doing free weight exercises. However, even if you do get tired really fast, you will gain more muscles and you will become a lot stronger at a very fast rate.

    You can include machine exercises in your program but you need to do it after you execute all the free weight exercises. This way, you will be able to take advantage of the strength you have on free weight exercises and not deplete it on machine exercises.

    If you are a beginner, concentrate on lighter weights. Your primary goal is not muscle gain yet. You first need to properly execute the free weight exercises you have in your program in order for you to move on to heavier weights.

    Concentrate on strengthening the supporting muscles first and when it is able to support the weight you are lifting and that you are able to execute the free weight exercises properly, then it’s time for you to concentrate on the primary muscles.

    Also, in order to gain muscle mass, you need to lift heavier weights. What heavy means is that weights that are challenging for you and weights that you will be able to lift with 8 to 12 repetitions for 3 sets. If you can do more than 15 repetitions before temporary failure sets in, then it will be considered as light weight.

    Remember these tips and you can be sure that you will be able to gain muscles fast. Always remember that one of the keys to muscle gain is to strengthen the supporting muscles. And, only doing free weight exercises will be able to do this efficiently.
