When you prepare in this way it is more likely that you will not be distracted by physical tension.

    As you begin to meditate watch and observe your thoughts without any judgments or condemnation. When you have observed your thoughts for a while, start to call the mind back like a little child. “We are breathing, we are letting go of these thoughts now.” Refocus on the breath coming in through your nose again, if you have become disturbed or distracted. If you are fearful be assured that nothing here can hurt you, this is a discovery of your inner self and a return to your TRUE nature.     Buddhism is a religion based on the teachings of Buddha which are referred to as “Dharma” or “the Dharma.”  Those who practice Buddhism engage in a spiritual quest to Nirvana, a state of complete enlightenment.    Over time the Buddhist religion has evolved, fractured and adapted as it spread through Asia and eventually the globe.  Today, there are three major sects of Buddhism and several lesser-known denominations of the religion.

In each, the Buddha is considered the spiritual leader.  The Four Noble Truths are core to their philosophies and teachings.  Those who practice Buddhism follow the principles of the Eightfold Path and believe that Buddhahood is the highest possible state that one could achieve.

    The Theravada or “doctrine of the Elders” was established around 300 BC..  This religion centered around the teachings of Buddha and encouraged it’s followers to use meditation as a means to teach the mind and eliminate suffering with the ultimate goal of reaching Nirvana.  Theravada Buddhism established the canon of Buddhist teachings and the laws governing the practices of Buddhist monks referred to as the Ten Precepts.

    Theravada Buddhism began in India and migrated to southeast Asia into Sri Lanka, Thailand, Burma, Vietnam and other Asian countries.  As this form of Buddhism was embraced by the indigenous people, the Theravada was altered to incorporate the religious beliefs of the various geographic regions. this form of Buddhism is still popular in Sri Lanka, Laos and Cambodia today.

    Mahayana, or Eastern Buddhism, expands the Pali Canon and includes other religious philosophies and texts that champion of belief in universal compassion and altruism.  This is central to their belief in an “Awakened mind.”  Practiced primarily in China, Korea and Japan, Mahayana Buddhism incorporates elements of cosmology and mysticism.  Mahayana Buddhism itself has divided into two main sects.  The version of Buddhism that puts emphasis on internalization of the spiritual path and self-reliance is called Zen Buddhism. The other form which emphasizes the need for dedication to the Amitabha Buddha in order to reach Nirvana is called Pure Land Buddhism.

    Although deeply influenced by Mahayana Buddhism, Tibetan Buddhism or Vajrayana is another distinct discipline of the Buddhist faith..  referred to as Tantric Buddhism, Vajrayana incorporates text and scriptures from both Mahayana and Theraveda Buddhism along with Buddhist Tantras.  A major difference of Vajrayana Buddhism is that it teaches that Buddhahood can be achieved in a single life time without need for reincarnation.

    Over 2,500 years in the past, Prince Siddharta Gautama was given birth in what is currently called Lumbini in Nepal. He was born a prince and his birth was received all sorts of special conditions that suggested a life of greatness.     At the age of 29, the prince determined that the world around him was far more problematic than he encountered in the walls of his palace.  Out and about amongst the citizens of the kingdom, he  found reality: sickness, old-age and death. The shock of this discovery left the youthful prince shaken. He decided then to dedicate himself to ending the suffering. Leaving behind his wife and child, the prince forsaked his worldly belongings and embarked on a spiritual quest.

    Guatama began a course of study under several teachers to understand their practices. With the aid of Alara Kalama, he began to comprehend meditation and discovered an exalted form known as absorption.  This allowed him to attain a state of nothingness where there was no moral or cognitive dimensions. Although this was helpful it was apparent to the former prince that it wouldn’t solve the suffering he  had observed.  Guatama continued his hunt for others who could possibly help him on his spiritual quest.  Udraka Ramputra, aided Gautama to perceive a state of neither perception or non-perception,  but this to wasn’t precisely what he was searching for. The next step in his quest led Gautama to Uruvilva in Northern India.  It was there that he deciced on an ascetic way, experiencing a life of deprival for nearly 6 years. This just resulted in the destruction of his entire body, weakness and self-destruction. Although it cost him his five followers, Gautama ended this ascetic lifestyle.

    The end of this spiritual quest appeared as far away as ever, so the Buddha sat down under a Bodhi tree and announced that “flesh may wither, blood may dry up, but I shall not rise from the spot until Enlightenment has been one.”  After forty days of thought and meditation, the Buddha finally realized Enlightenment.

    It’s the Buddhist belief that at that moment he accomplished a state of being that exceeds anything else in the universe. Each of our normal experiences are based on preconceptions and circumstances: how we were raised, our experiences, flaws and mistakes. Enlightenment is a state in which the complicated inner workings of existence become clear and the reason for human suffering identified.

    For the next 45 years, the Buddha moved through much of what’s today northern India. He taught the way of Enlightenment to all or any who wanted to understand. This instruction had become known as the dharma or “the teaching of the enlightened one.     The Buddha accepted numerous disciples that in turn attained their own Enlightenment and so they trained others.

    Buddhists believe that Buddha attained a state of being that moves beyond everthing else in the world. If typical experience is based on conditions – parental input, mindsets, views, perceptions, and so on – Enlightenment is Unconditioned. It was a state when the Buddha obtained insight into the deepest workings of life and for that reason, into the reason for human suffering, the problem that had set Him on His spiritual quest in the first place.

    The Buddha statue we often see doesn not represent a god and would not consider himself as a divine creature. He was just a man that endeavored to transform himself by means of self reflection and meditation. Buddhists view him as an ideal and his quest as a guide which could encourage them on the path to enlightenment.  Most homes that practice Buddhism will display some type of Buddha decor like a statue of Buddha, but this is intended to remind them of their own spiritual journey.
